Why an inflatable rat?
Scabby the inflatable rat has been a symbol of worker struggle against backsliding wages and benefits. First utilized by the Operating Engineers Local 150 union in 1989, the rat symbolizes a boss’ attack on wages, benefits, and working conditions. More than just a terrifying figure, Scabby is a metaphor for the way in which bad behavior by management can infect an industry and hurt all workers.
